When we plan a vacation, it is fun to see all of the local sights while we are there. However, it is also fun to take a step back in time and experience what life was like in another time. This can easily be done in most towns by going to a fun museum, touring an old home, or going on a plantation where you can interact with exhibits and actors to find out a more in-depth look at another era. Here in Kennebunkport, we love visiting the Seashore Trolley Museum. This fun museum gives its visitors an easy look at all of the different trolleys and streetcars we have had over the years.

In the Beginnning

The Seashore Trolley Museum started in 1939 when Ted Santarelli, John Amlaw, and Gerald Cunningham were all on a trip and realized that one of their favorite towns was about to give up the trolley system in favor of buses. Not wanting the trolley to go to waste, they bought it and then over the years, they went to other towns who were getting rid of their trolleys and the bought those as well. Trolleys are still being collected even today and visitors love seeing all the different types of trolleys. Today the Seashore Trolley Museum has become one of the largest collections of electric railway cars.

Before Visiting The Kennebunkport Seashore Trolley Museum

Visiting the Museum is easy  but be sure you check out their site before you visit.  The museum’s hours are from 10am to 5pm, however, the last trolley leaves at 4:14pm. Tickets are a steal for this treasure trove of trolleys. Adults are $10, Children 6-16 are $7.50, Seniors 60 and up are $8 and children 5 and under are free.

When you get to the Trolley Museum you will be amazed at all of the different types of exhibits available. Be sure to grab your museum guide when you get there so you won’t miss a thing. First, be sure to immerse yourself in the history of the railway, which is the step between a horse and carriage and busses today. Next, ride the interpretive railway where you will go on a  ride in a restored street car through the relaxing Maine woods. Make your way to the restoration shop, where all of the Seashore Trolley Museum cars are brought back to their glory and also help keep all the others in tip top shape. Conclude your trip with a stroll in the museum store. Find a souvenir for yourself or something special for someone you love.
