While your average Episcopal Church might not draw such attention the Stone Chapel at St. Ann’s is most definitely NOT average.
The Stone Chapel is over 130 years old, surrounded by gardens, and provides expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. It was constructed in 1887 using large, sea-washed stones from the nearby beach. This gives the historic chapel its unique look and is undoubtedly the main – but not the only – reason it remains such a popular destination for visitors.
Inside The Stone Chapel
Fixtures, furnishings, and other details inside the chapel add to the building’s enduring popularity.
Of particular note are the chapel’s 31, beautiful stained glass windows, many of which date back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. 25 of the windows are in the church proper, with the last 6 gracing the chapel sacristy. Be sure to check them all out.
The chapel’s interior walls and sacristy use the same stones as those on the building’s exterior. The chancel features a white marble mosaic floor, walls and steps of polished Italian marble, and a pink granite altar. The ceiling of the nave is braced with classic hard pine hammer beam trusses.
Other details include a limestone baptismal font gifted to the church in 1902, handmade oak pews and clergy stalls, and a 400 year old Bishop’s Chair.
